As a child I was fascinated by the illustrations in storybooks, particularly how meaning is conveyed pictorially. At an early age I noticed that different styles and colors created different moods, from the foreboding to the whimsical. Revisiting these storybooks as an adult, I was struck by the Freudian undertones in the illustrations. In the world of children’s stories the innocent and sentimental are subverted by the suggestive and forbidden.
