Portraits
My favorite painters in art history have been those who painted portraits for the court, chiefly Velazquez and Goya. But of course there are other great portrait artists as well, from Rembrandt to Alice Neel, who in my view was the greatest portrait artist of the 20th century. Their examples set a bar so high it can be crushing. Yet… even as I continue to explore and experiment with different approaches, I often switch back to straight-ahead figurative painting and portraiture: sometimes for myself and sometimes when my collectors, already familiar with my work, commission me. Portraiture in many ways is in the DNA of my art.
